Guitar Songs to Learn
As a budding guitarist, there is immense satisfaction in getting
to the stage where you can play a recognisable song. Once you have learnt How to
Play Guitar Chords and How to Strum a
Guitar; (if you have not done so already, take a look at the
articles on this site), you are in a good position to make music.
Although you may have your favourite Guns ‘n’ Roses song that you would just
love to be able to play, it’s best to start off by picking some easy guitar songs to learn. On top of that, if
you’ve got a good singing voice, there are some easy guitar songs to learn that you will be able to sing along
to and give a very recognisable performance. Don’t be mistaken in thinking that all the famous and big hits are
going to be difficult to play. Sometimes the simplicity of their structure contributes to their gravitas. For
example, take ‘House of the Rising Sun’, the immortal anthem by sixties band The Animals. This entire song
consists of just seven chords repeating: A minor, C, D, F, A minor, E, A minor. Master this easy guitar song to
learn and you’ll have people of all ages singing along.

Moving a bit more up to date, ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis is another easy guitar song to learn.
Below is a chunk of this popular song with the chords embedded in the lyrics. Now I know what you’re thinking.
You’re thinking ‘why haven’t you presented this using guitar tabs?’ That’s a very good question; after all,
we’ve taught you how to read guitar tabs in the article Guitar Tabs for
Beginners. Indeed, it would be
better to present a couple of easy guitar songs to learn using tabs, however, guitar tabs, although not a true
classical musical manuscript have become mainstream in the contemporary guitar world and publication of easy
guitar songs to learn using guitar tabs could breach musical copyright. For the same reason, we have not given
you the whole song here, but once you’ve learnt this you’ll easily be able to play the repeating sections.
However, if you do want complete guitar tabs for easy guitar songs to learn there are online stores where you
can download tabs for a small fee.

Finally, something a little bit more tricky but still quite an easy guitar
song to learn, here is a section from Pink Floyds ‘Wish You Were Here’. In this example the chords are
laid over the lyrics the change is made on.
[G] [C]
[D]
[D]So, so you think you can tell
[Am]
[G]
[D]
heaven from hell, blue sky from pain. Can you tell a green field, from a
[C]
[Am]
[G]
cold steel rail, a smile from a veil? Do you think you can tell?
[C]
[D]
[Am]
Did they get you trade, your heroes for ghosts, hot ashes for trees, hot air
[G]
[D]
[C]
from a cool breeze, cold comfort for change, did you exchange, a walk on
[Am]
[G]
the part of the war, for a lead role in the cage.
[C]
[D] [Am]
How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls swimming
[G] [D]
[C]
in a fish bowl, year after year. Running over the same old ground, but have
[Am]
[G]
we found the same old fears, wish you were here.
